about PsyOps by the media. I thought it would be good
idea to compile some information about it. WEN]

In mind warfare, U.S. living in the past

By Tom Infield
San Jose Mercury News
Published October 15, 2001

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. military's psychological warriors have been sent
to
the Afghanistan region with equipment to broadcast political messages to
the
Afghan people.

But a Pentagon report released last year suggests that the equipment is
outdated and inadequate, especially in comparison with the
sophistication of
American weapons.

U.S. Commando Solo II Takes Over Afghan Airwaves
By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29, 2001 -- After years of Taliban propaganda, the
Afghan
people are hearing another voice.

At any time of the day or night, an Air Force Special Operations Command
EC-130E Commando Solo II is in the area of operations and broadcasting
news
and information to the Afghan people.

The aircraft fly a variety of missions. In Afghanistan, they're
broadcasting
music, news and information in the various languages of the country.
These
are radio broadcasts only.

PsyOps Leaflets dropped over Afghanistan during Operation Enduring
Freedom

[A nice email which someone wrote to me. WEN]

"I am a sixty year old American, ex- U.S. Navy Vet. I read an article in
the
10/26/01 San Francisco Examiner newspaper about the Army's dropping
leaflets
onto the Afghan countryside. I was just wondering if the Army had
considered
the forced illiteracy of those Afghanis and if any of their genius Psych
fellows had considered something that anyone who isn't deaf could use.
Talking about those 'Solar/ Dynamo Powered Radios' you can buy at any
Radio
Shack for twenty bucks. Seems to this old fart that what those refugees
need
more is some Armed Forces Radio broadcasts in their own language along
with
a tune or three to lighten their sorry moods. Just a thought here from
an
every-day old dude. You can have a god laugh with it anyway. God bless
George and Dick and keep our troops safe. AMEN!"

Winning the war by convincing the enemy to go home

A Minnesota battalion played a key role in convincing thousands of
Iraqis to
surrender or desert. Col. Jim Noll of Wabasha and Forest Lake was the
commander of that battalion.

Winning Hearts and Minds

The Bush administration has launched a war of words in addition to its
military strikes in an attempt to sway the people of the Middle East to
the
side of the United States.

President George W. Bush has chosen a number of forums in which to
enunciate
U.S. objectives of the war on terrorism. Whether it was in front of a
joint
session of Congress, at a formal White House press conference or at one
of
many daily briefings, he has concentrated on securing support for his
war
policy and urging patience as well as resolve.

Psychological warfare waged in Afghanistan

12:08 10 October 01
Emma Young

Psychological operations will play a key role in the war in Afghanistan
and,
although few details are being revealed, US defense secretary Donald
Rumsfeld has confirmed that "PsyOps" have begun.

PsyOps has two main purposes: to persuade the enemy to surrender, and to
convince local civilians that the attackers are not the real enemy.
Leaflet
drops and radio propaganda broadcasts are the chief weapons.

How a war of nerves can be won without body bags
IAN BRUCE
The acme of skill in war was the ability to subdue the enemy without
fighting, according to Sun Tzu, the ancient Chinese strategist whose
works
are still mandatory reading at military colleges.

He was talking about psychological warfare, the art of conning an
opponent
into surrender or using the perception of overwhelming force to achieve
a
political goal without bodybags.

The United States has drafted its own "psyops" specialists into the new
war
as one of the least lethal, but potentially most effective, weapons in
its
arsenal.
