The Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, established in 1996 with
objectives in research, teaching and networking, invites applications to
fill the following positions:

Contemporary Islam

International Relations of Northeast Asia

Management of Defence Technology

Maritime Security

Applicants for the Contemporary Islam position are expected to have a good
understanding of Islamic history, Islamic law and jurisprudence and
theological issues.  In addition, they must have a good understanding of
Islamic culture and practice.  Knowledge of Arabic and/or Malay/Bahasa
Indonesia would be an advantage.

Applicants for the International Relations of Northeast Asia position are
expected to be  specialists in Chinese security and foreign policy.  A
secondary interest in Sino-U.S. relations, Northeast Asian security
cooperation or China?s relations with its neighbours will be helpful.

Applicants for the Management of Defence Technology position are expected to
be familiar with military technology in general including various aspects of
technology associated with the on-going ?revolution in military affairs? and
how such technology can be managed economically and affordably for use by
military forces.

Applicants for the Maritime Security position are expected to have a good
knowledge of the national maritime policies and practices of littoral ASEAN
countries, the security of ports and ships, and shipping in the Straits of
Malacca and Straits of Singapore.

In each case, applicants should have a strong background in international
relations or strategic studies; successful candidates will be asked to teach
courses in these areas.

All the positions involve research, teaching one to two courses per year on
a trimester system in the Institute?s Master of Science programme,
supervising Ph.D. candidates, and a commitment to networking.  Contract
length is three years and renewable, subject to mutual agreement.

Candidates? records should demonstrate the potential for excellence in
scholarship.  Appointments to each of the first three positions will be made
at the associate professor or assistant professor level, depending on
qualifications and experience, while appointment to the Maritime Security
position would be made at the research fellow level.  Applicants at the
associate professor level should have at least one published book.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment.  All
applicants should submit a cover letter that describes their research
agenda, a full C.V., and a writing sample.  Shortlisted candidates will be
asked to provide three letters of recommendation later.  Screening of
applicants will begin on October 1 and continue until the position is
filled.  Salary is competitive and will depend on qualifications and
experience.
