Merger of US mini-UAV programs surprises industry
The decision by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
to select the same contractor for Phase II of its Organic Air Vehicle
(OAV) program and the Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) advanced technology
concept demonstration (ACTD) has surprised at least one potential
bidder, which has accordingly elected not to compete for the awards.

MicroAUVs collaborate to track down their prey
Nekton Research, working with Duke University under funding from the US
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), has developed a
family
of micro-miniature autonomous underwater vehicles (MicroAUVs) that can
operate individually or in collaborating swarms to perform a wide
variety
of military tasks. The vehicles are small enough to be hand-launched or
air-dropped, yet have a range of up to 30km, and exploit environmental
cues
for autonomous navigation. The simplest variants have only one moving
part,
resulting in low cost and ease of operation.
