                         (House Passes Cyber Security bill, sends it to

                         The U.S. House of Representatives recently
passed the "Cyber Security
                         Research and Development Act", which will
allocate $880 million over
                         five years to "establish security programs at
the National Institute
                         of Standards and Technology and the National
Science Foundation."

                         The programs will include educational grants
and research centers.

                         The bill, H.R. 3394, passed the House February
7 and has been sent to
                         the Senate for consideration. It has not yet
been brought to the
                         floor.

                         Following is the text from FedTechnology.com:

                         HOUSE PASSES $880 MILLION CYBERSECURITY
LEGISLATION

                         The U.S. House of Representatives has passed
cybersecurity legislation
                         that will allocate $880 million over five years
to establish security
                         programs at the National Institute of Standards
and Technology and the
                         National Science Foundation.

                         The programs will include educational grants
and research centers. The
                         bill, H.R. 3394, is called the "Cyber Security
Research and
                         Development Act."

                         Among the issues that would be studied under
the legislation are
                         authentication and cryptography; computer
forensics and intrusion
                         detection; reliability of computer and network
applications,
                         middleware, operating systems, and
communications and infrastructure;
                         and privacy and confidentiality.

                         The bill has been referred to the U.S. Senate
for action.
